Whenever you are learning something new, it is a good idea to learn the basic terms and vocabulary associated with it, as it enables you to have a clearer and quicker understanding of the subject and how to use it. The same applies to roulette as well.
To be able to play roulette well, it is vital to know the different basic terms associated with the game. This alone will enable you to increase your understanding of the game manifold and there by put you on par with players who have learned the game much before you.
In this article, we will discuss some of the terms and expressions that form the basic vocabulary in roulette. Knowing these commonly used terms enables you to understand the game faster and better.
Common Roulette Terms
The first word that comes to mind is ‘croupier’, which refers to the casino representative who is in charge of manning the roulette wheel. The croupier is an important player in the scheme of things in roulette.
The second word in the roulette vocabulary that you should be familiar with is ‘house advantage.’ This is a term you will be familiar with if you are used to casino games, as each game has a house advantage. The house advantage basically means the advantage that the house or casino has over you, the player, in terms of winning.
Another word that you will use is ‘toke’, which basically refers to the tip that you leave for a dealer when you win. Other words that you should know when you come to play roulette include wheel check (which refers to unmarked chips that you find in roulette tables), neighbors (refers to the numbers on either side of a winning number), and green numbers (a reference to the numbers 0 and 00 that you see in green).
Betting Terms
One term that you will come across in roulette frequently is ‘column bet’. This term refers to a bet that you can place on any one of the three columns you see on the roulette table. This bet has a payout of 2 to 1.
Another commonly used term is ‘corner bet.’ The corner bet is one you can place on the point where any four numbers intersect, as the name suggests. This bet has a payout of 8 to 1.
A third term that you will come across is the ‘dozens bet.’ This is a bet you can place on 12 numbers at a stretch. There are three such groups of numbers you can bet on – 1 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 36. The dozens bet pays 2 to 1.
Two other terms you should definitely know when it comes to the bets in roulette are ‘inside bets’ and ‘outside bets.’ The term ‘inside bet’ refers to bets you can place on numbers present inside the layout. The payout associated with inside bets ranges from 5 to 1 (line bet) right up to 35 to 1 (straight-up bet). The term ‘outside bet’ refers to any bet that you place on the outer area of the roulette table, i.e. the part that is just outside the area containing the number grid. All outside bets pay even money.
